Chapter 31 is done! Only one more chapter to go and I’ll have finished this novel for the second time. Need to look at my original final chapter and see what I can salvage from it – the last paragraph needs to be deleted with extreme prejudice, but some of it might hold up.

Today’s Scribbling: Novel Writing
Halfway through the penultimate chapter, and the pieces are literally being put together. One last mystery remains – that and the inevitable fiery climax.
Today’s Scribbling: Novel Writing
Pub chapter is done, pints have been drunk and wisdom gained! Those who drink at the fountain of knowledge leave enlightened. Next stop is some dramatic action for the climax, then the denoument (also in a pub. Irish!)
Today’s Scribbling: Novel Writing
In some mystery novels everything gets figured out in the parlour via the genius of The Great Detective. In a proper Irish mystery novel, everything gets figured out in the pub using beer and unfocused conversation. It’s our way.
Today’s Scribbling: Novel Writing
Church bells and barroom buzz open out chapter 30 in the tale. Looking like two more chapters after this and I’ve finished the first draft! Again! So glad I decided to trash the old ending – this is painful, but the end result should be worth it.
Today’s Scribbling: The penultimate Sherlock
Brain too full of Despicable Me 2 (it’s good!) to properly transport myself to a smoky 1920s Dublin pub, so I wrote up the intro and did some research for the second-last of the Sherlock films.
Today’s Scribbling: Sherlock Holmes in Pursuit To Algiers (1945)
Today I finished up the review for Pursuit To Algiers. This is another one that I liked a lot more on the repeat viewing – it’s very well written and has a lot of nice touches. It also led me to dig out a lot of trivia that I’d not known – did you know Nigel Bruce (who plays Watson) was descended from the medieval kings of Scotland? It’s even relevant to the film!
Today’s Scribbling: Taking four hours to watch a one hour movie
Well, that tends to happen when you disappear down rabbitholes about German actors in WW2 Hollywood, actresses abandoning film for psychology, 1940s wrestling…still, Pursuit to Algiers is synopsised now. Conclusions, pictures and editing may happen tomorrow or may not, depending mostly on mood and whim.
Today’s Scribbling: Sherlock on a boat
Novel juices are stewing, so today I wrote the intro for the next Sherlock review. Not sure if I’ll do it over the weekend, or dive into the novel stuff – entirely depends on whether I feel I’ve worked it out enough by tomorrow!
Today’s Scribbling: Novel Planning
Planned out what is possibly the second last chapter. Definitely in the home straight anyway. The chapter’s mind-map includes an entry “The Paradox of the Gun”. I feel nothing more need be said.
